Apply now for the JAMA Internal Medicine Teachable Moment Editorial Fellowship

Application Deadline
May 31, 2024

The JAMA Internal Medicine Teachable Moment Editorial Fellowship Program will enroll Chief Residents in Internal Medicine from across the US and Canada to work with the editors of the JAMA Internal Medicine Teachable Moment series to solicit, edit, and publish manuscripts intended to promote appropriate use of medical care.

Goals

  • Understand the process by which journals review and make decisions on manuscripts.
  • Participate in the editorial process.
  • Complete a scholarly project.
  • Improve high-value care teaching at the Editorial Fellow’s academic institution.

Requirements

Eligible Editorial Fellows must be Chief Residents in an accredited Internal Medicine Training program in the US or Canada. Teachable Moment Editorial Fellows are expected to be interested in high-value care, medical education or research, and a career in academic medicine. Editorial Fellows will serve for 6 months and must be able to commit to the duties listed below:

  • Undergoing training in use of the eJP online system for managing submitted manuscripts.
  • Acting as Corresponding Editor for at least 6 Teachable Moment manuscripts.
  • Providing written comments using the eJP online editorial system on all Teachable Moment manuscripts submitted (approximately 15-20 800-word manuscripts over a 6-month period).
  • Attending Teachable Moment Editors conference calls every 2 weeks for 30-60 minutes to discuss manuscripts and decide on publication.
  • Entering brief notes on the eJP system related to decisions made on the biweekly editorial call.
  • Occasionally performing focused research on the evidence supporting Teachable Moment manuscripts.
  • Completing a scholarly project. Typically, this will be submission of a Teachable Moment manuscript, ideally with a trainee in the Fellow’s residency program, but other types of scholarly projects are welcomed. JAMA Teachable Moment Editors are available to help with these projects.
  • Participating in the selection process for the next JAMA Internal Medicine Teachable Moment Editorial Fellows.

In addition to these core responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to attend the weekly JAMA Internal Medicine Editorial Meeting. During these 2-hour calls on Mondays from 10 am to 12 pm PT, the Editorial team discusses submitted scientific manuscripts, commentaries, Viewpoints, and other article types and makes editorial decisions regarding publication. Teachable Moment Editorial Fellows will participate in at least 6 of these weekly JAMA Internal Medicine editorial calls during their 6-month fellowship. Teachable Moment Editorial Fellows will also act as a peer reviewer for at least 2 submitted manuscripts. Fellows will be provided information on how to write a manuscript review and be paired with a JAMA Internal Medicine Editor to help prepare the manuscript review. While it is not required, the JAMA Internal Medicine Editors welcome your input on the editorial calls. You may comment on the clinical and scientific importance of manuscripts, methodologic issues, or presentation. Regular attendance on the calls is not required; you can attend and participate as your time and schedule allow.

Teachable Moment Editorial Fellow Selection

Four fellows will be selected for the 2024-2025 academic year, each for a 6-month rotation with 2 fellows serving concurrently. Fellows are expected to have prior scholarly activity, preferably a published Teachable Moment or medical education-related article, though other academic activities will also be considered. Fellows will be selected based on their background and interest in high-value care and medical education or research.

Application

Applications from rising Chief Residents will be accepted from April 22, 2024, to May 31, 2024. Selected fellows will be notified by June 14, 2024. Please submit:
