COVID-19 Vaccination Linked With Lower Risk of Cardiac Problems

JAMA. 2024;331(17):1439. doi:10.1001/jama.2024.5152

People who received a SARS-CoV-2 vaccination had a lower risk of heart failure and blood clots in their veins and arteries after COVID-19 infection than those who had not been vaccinated, a recent involving more than 20 million participants in Estonia, Spain, and the UK found.

The magnitude of the lower risk—which ranged from a 45% to 81% relative risk reduction—was greatest during the first month after infection, although vaccinated participants had a reduced chance of these cardiovascular events through 1 year.

The findings are likely a product of less severe disease in SARS-CoV-2 vaccinated people who are infected with COVID-19, the researchers wrote in Heart.
